Registered Veterinary Technician, Anesthesia

About the Role
Calgary Animal Referral and Emergency (C.A.R.E.) Centre is looking for a full-time Registered Veterinary Technician to join the Anesthesia service. This is where your expertise in anesthesia truly shines. You'll be managing anesthesia across multiple departments in a busy referral and emergency setting—ventilators, epidurals, and complex cases are part of your daily toolkit.
You'll work Monday to Thursday, 7:30 am to 6 pm, with additional after-hours anesthesia duties as needed. The role balances technical skill with client communication, pre- and post-operative radiography, lab sample handling, CT scan assistance, and precise patient record-keeping. VTS-certified technicians interested in pursuing VTS certification in anesthesia are particularly encouraged to apply.
Key Responsibilities
- Administer and manage anesthesia protocols, including ventilator support and epidural techniques
- Provide anesthesia support across multiple hospital departments
- Communicate with clients about anesthesia procedures and post-operative care
- Perform pre- and post-operative radiographs
- Collect and submit blood samples and other laboratory specimens
- Assist with CT scan procedures
- Maintain accurate and timely patient records
- Work independently and collaboratively as part of the anesthesia team
Requirements
- Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) or Technologist credential
- Current registration with AHT (Association of Veterinary Technologists of Alberta)
- Eligible for registration with AAAHT (Alberta Association of Animal Health Technologists)
- Demonstrated experience with anesthesia protocols
- Excellent interpersonal skills and compassion for animal and client needs
- Strong verbal and written communication abilities
- Ability to work efficiently both independently and as part of a team
