Veterinary Extern - General Practice

About the Role

An externship at Baccalieu Trail Animal Hospital offers veterinary students a meaningful window into the day-to-day operations of a general practice, with direct mentorship from experienced Associate Veterinarians. You'll work in a supportive environment committed to excellent medicine and exceptional animal care, gaining the clinical skills and professional confidence you need as you progress through your veterinary education.

Externship placements typically run 2 to 8 weeks, depending on both your academic schedule and the hospital's capacity. The timing is flexible, so whether you're looking for a summer placement or fitting it around your academic calendar, there's room to make it work. All veterinary students — regardless of class year — are welcome to apply.

Key Responsibilities

• Gather patient histories and perform physical examinations under supervision
• Develop and discuss treatment plans with the supervising veterinarian
• Assist with or perform diagnostic procedures
• Participate in dentistry services and surgical procedures
• Support the medical management of patients throughout their stay
• Build communication skills by working collaboratively with veterinarians, support staff, and clients

Requirements

• Currently enrolled as a veterinary student in the clinical portion of your education
• Enthusiasm for hands-on learning and a willingness to take on clinical responsibilities
• Professional communication skills and a commitment to animal welfare
