Veterinary Extern - General Practice
Ready to gain hands-on clinical experience in a supportive, collaborative practice? Spend 2–8 weeks at Carnegy Animal Hospital learning from experienced veterinarians and building real-world skills.
About the Role
This externship at Carnegy Animal Hospital offers 3rd and 4th year veterinary students a chance to experience the full scope of general practice operations while working alongside seasoned Associate Veterinarians. You'll rotate through core clinical areas—patient histories, physical examinations, diagnostic procedures, dentistry, surgical assistance, and medical management—giving you a realistic snapshot of what daily practice looks like.
Externships typically run 2–8 weeks depending on your academic schedule and the hospital's capacity. Beyond technical skills, you'll develop communication abilities working with the medical team, support staff, and clients—the interpersonal side of veterinary medicine that matters just as much as clinical knowledge.
Halifax offers plenty to do during your downtime: the waterfront and beaches are nearby, the local food and craft brewery scene is vibrant, and there's a genuine maritime culture to explore. It's a great city to spend a few weeks getting to know.
