About the Role

This externship at Mitchell Animal Hospital offers clinical-year veterinary students the chance to experience real-world general practice operations. You'll work closely with supervising Associate Veterinarians, building practical skills across the full range of small animal medicine—from patient histories and physical exams through diagnostics, dentistry, and surgical assistance.

The externship typically runs 2–8 weeks depending on your schedule and the hospital's needs. Beyond clinical work, you'll develop communication skills by interacting with the medical team, support staff, and clients in a supportive environment that's genuinely committed to excellent medicine and exceptional animal care.

Key Responsibilities

  • Gather patient histories and perform physical examinations
  • Assist with creation of diagnostic and treatment plans
  • Support or perform dentistry procedures
  • Observe, assist with, and perform surgical procedures under supervision
  • Participate in medical management of patients
  • Communicate and collaborate with veterinarians, technicians, and clients

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in the clinical year of a veterinary program
