Veterinary Extern - General Practice

About the Role

This externship offers veterinary students a chance to dive into the day-to-day realities of general practice at Family Pet Hospital, an NVA location committed to excellent medicine and exceptional animal care. You'll spend 2–8 weeks (depending on your schedule and the hospital's needs) working directly with experienced Associate Veterinarians, gaining hands-on experience you won't get in a classroom.

Your days will involve gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, developing treatment plans, assisting with diagnostics and dentistry, and observing or performing surgical procedures. Beyond clinical skills, you'll sharpen your communication with the veterinary team, support staff, and pet owners—the human side of practice that matters just as much.

Key Responsibilities

• Work closely with supervising Associate Veterinarians on clinical cases
• Gather patient histories and perform physical examinations
• Assist in creating and implementing treatment plans
• Support diagnostic procedures and dental services
• Observe and assist with, or perform, surgical procedures under supervision
• Participate in medical management of hospitalized patients
• Develop communication skills by interacting with the medical team, support staff, and clients

Requirements

• Currently enrolled in the clinical portion of a veterinary medicine program
• Students of any class year are encouraged to apply
