About the Role

This is a rare hybrid opportunity that combines clinical expertise, strategic leadership, and operational insight. You'll serve as a trusted medical advisor and mentor across a network of hospitals in Western Canada, working closely with the National Medical Director and regional operations leadership to elevate standards of care and shape the future of veterinary medicine in the region.

What makes this different: You'll maintain hands-on clinical practice three days per week, staying connected to patients and teams while devoting the remainder of your time to coaching DVMs, supporting hospital operations, and driving quality improvements. This isn't a desk-bound role—clinic presence is essential, and you'll spend significant time observing, coaching, and building relationships with veterinary teams across multiple locations. Approximately 40% travel within the region is expected.

Success depends on influence and mentorship rather than authority alone. You'll guide experienced clinicians, support them through complex cases, facilitate peer-to-peer learning, and help hospitals translate medical insights into practical improvements in patient outcomes and team effectiveness.

Key Responsibilities

• Champion high standards of evidence-based care across all regional hospitals and partner with the National Medical Director to develop and implement protocols and guidelines
• Observe, coach, and mentor veterinarians in-clinic; support Managing DVMs in building strong medical leadership within their hospitals; facilitate mentorship programs for new and early-career veterinarians
• Review medical records, clinical outcomes, and reports to identify improvement opportunities; use hospital data and KPIs to strengthen client compliance, doctor productivity, RVT utilization, and overall efficiency
• Strengthen diagnostic, surgical, and dental capabilities regionally and contribute to the development of Standard Operating Procedures
• Partner with Regional Operations Managers and Practice Managers to ensure hospitals deliver excellent patient care aligned with sustainable business performance
• Ensure hospitals remain compliant with provincial veterinary regulatory requirements; conduct compliance reviews; stay informed on evolving regulations and support management of board complaints
• Partner with Talent Acquisition to identify and recruit DVM candidates; participate in key interviews; support initiatives that enhance veterinarian engagement and retention
• Foster a collaborative, psychologically safe culture across hospitals; organize and lead regional DVM meetings and professional development events
• Maintain clinical practice approximately three days per week, supporting hospitals and maintaining direct patient care

Requirements

• Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM or equivalent) from an accredited university
• Licensed (or eligible for licensure) to practice veterinary medicine in Alberta
• Minimum five to seven years of clinical experience in small animal medicine
• Demonstrated leadership experience in veterinary practice or multi-site environment
• Strong clinical proficiency in medicine, surgery, and dentistry
• Experience mentoring or coaching veterinarians (highly desirable)
• Ability to interpret data and apply insights to improve medical and operational performance
• Willingness to travel within the region (approximately 40%)
