Veterinary Extern - General Practice
Gain real clinical experience at a supportive, quality-focused practice. Work alongside experienced veterinarians in general small animal medicine — from diagnostics and dentistry to surgery and patient management.
About the Role
This externship at Carnegy Animal Hospital offers 3rd and 4th year veterinary students a hands-on introduction to the day-to-day realities of general practice. You'll work closely with supervising Associate Veterinarians across the full scope of small animal medicine: gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, developing treatment plans, running diagnostics, assisting with dentistry and surgical procedures, and managing medical cases. Beyond clinical skills, you'll sharpen your communication with the veterinary team, support staff, and clients — essential preparation for your career ahead.
Externships typically run 2–8 weeks depending on your schedule and the hospital's needs. Carnegy Animal Hospital is part of the NVA network, which maintains a culture of supportive, evidence-based medicine and genuine client care across all its locations.
Eligible students in the clinical phase of their veterinary education can access a travel and living expense stipend — details available upon inquiry.
