Veterinary Extern - General Practice
Gain hands-on clinical experience at a supportive NVA hospital in beautiful Squamish. Work alongside experienced veterinarians while developing your skills in surgery, diagnostics, dentistry, and patient care.
About the Role
This externship offers veterinary students a meaningful opportunity to experience the daily operations of a busy general practice while building real clinical skills. You'll work closely with Associate Veterinarians, gaining hands-on experience in patient history-taking, physical examinations, treatment planning, diagnostics, dentistry, and surgical procedures. Beyond the technical work, you'll develop your communication skills working with the medical team, support staff, and clients—essential for any successful veterinarian.
Externships typically run 2–8 weeks depending on your schedule and the hospital's needs. All veterinary students, regardless of class year, are encouraged to apply. If you're in the clinical portion of your education, you may be eligible for a travel and living expense stipend.
Key Responsibilities
- Gather patient histories and perform physical examinations under veterinarian supervision
- Assist with or observe diagnostic procedures, dentistry, and surgical cases
- Participate in creating and implementing treatment plans
- Support medical management of patients throughout their care
- Collaborate with the medical team and support staff to provide excellent client service
Requirements
- Currently enrolled as a veterinary student
- Ability to commit to 2–8 weeks of clinical experience
