Veterinary Extern - General Practice
Gain hands-on clinical experience at a supportive NVA hospital in Lethbridge. Work alongside experienced veterinarians, build your surgical and diagnostic skills, and get paid for your externship.
About the Role
This externship at Family Pet Hospital offers veterinary students a practical window into real-world practice operations. You'll work closely with Associate Veterinarians to develop core clinical competencies—from taking patient histories and performing physical exams to assisting with diagnostics, dentistry, and surgical procedures. Beyond hands-on medicine, you'll strengthen your communication skills working alongside the veterinary team, support staff, and clients.
Externships typically run two to eight weeks, depending on your academic schedule and the hospital's needs. All veterinary students, regardless of class year, are welcome to apply. Students in the clinical portion of their education are eligible for a travel and living expense stipend to support your placement.
Key Responsibilities
- Gather patient histories and perform physical examinations under supervision
- Develop and assist with treatment plans
- Participate in diagnostic procedures and dental services
- Observe, assist with, and perform (as appropriate) surgical procedures
- Provide medical management support for hospitalized patients
- Communicate effectively with the medical team, support staff, and pet owners
Requirements
- Currently enrolled in a veterinary medicine program
- In or approaching the clinical portion of your education
