About the Role

Veterinary Emergency and Referral Hospital of West Toronto is looking for a board-certified surgeon to join as a second surgeon on the team. This is a chance to work in a cutting-edge 24-hour emergency and referral practice where your surgical expertise will be in high demand and genuinely valued. The hospital is actively expanding its specialty services, meaning you'll have opportunities to shape the direction of the surgical program and mentor other veterinarians.

The schedule offers real flexibility: while on-call coverage is available if you're interested, it's entirely optional. Many surgeons here maintain a full-time schedule during regular business hours without evening, weekend, or on-call obligations — giving you genuine work-life balance in a high-acuity environment. You'll work alongside a seasoned, highly skilled surgeon and a board-certified anesthesiologist, so complex cases are collaborative, not isolating. The practice is located near major highways, shopping, and restaurants, with downtown Toronto just 30 minutes away.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform surgical procedures across emergency and referral cases, including orthopedics and soft tissue surgery
  • Lead and supervise surgical cases using two fully equipped surgical suites
  • Collaborate with the anesthesia team and other specialists to deliver integrated patient care
  • Contribute to the development and advancement of surgical services as the practice expands specialty offerings
  • Mentor and work alongside other surgical staff in a supportive, evidence-based environment

Requirements

  • Board certification in Small Animal Surgery (ACVS or equivalent)
  • DVM or equivalent veterinary degree
  • Current veterinary licence in Ontario
  • Demonstrable experience in emergency and/or referral surgical practice

Benefits

  • Salary: $225,000–$275,000 CAD annually, based on experience
  • Signing bonus, relocation assistance, and retention bonus available
  • Comprehensive benefits plan with 100% employer-paid premiums (medical, dental, vision)
  • RRSP plan with employer matching
  • Licensing and membership dues fully covered
  • Generous CE (continuing education) and uniform allowance
  • Flexible scheduling: full-time or part-time hours available
  • Optional on-call coverage (not required)
  • Access to extensive surgical instrumentation and orthopedic implants
  • Upcoming CT imaging capability (in development)
  • Open to discussing individual needs and career goals
