Veterinary Extern - Equine

About the Role

This externship at Russell Equine Veterinary Service offers veterinary students the chance to get genuine hands-on experience in an independent equine practice. You'll work in an ambulatory setting—the real-world daily operations of equine medicine—rather than just observing from the sidelines.

Working alongside veterinarians and technicians, you'll gain practical exposure across preventative medicine, dentistry, lameness diagnosis and treatment, reproductive care, emergency care, and minor surgery. It's the kind of diverse caseload that helps you figure out what equine work actually looks like in practice.

Key Responsibilities

• Assist veterinarians and technicians in a mobile/ambulatory equine practice
• Participate in preventative medicine and wellness examinations
• Support equine dentistry procedures
• Gain experience with lameness evaluation and treatment protocols
• Assist with reproductive health and breeding soundness exams
• Support emergency care situations
• Participate in minor surgical procedures

Requirements

• Currently enrolled as a 3rd or 4th year veterinary student
• Interest in equine medicine and practice
