Ready to get real clinical experience before graduation? Bowmanville Veterinary Clinic welcomes 4th-year vet students to a hands-on externship working with an experienced team across small animal, exotic, and zoo medicine.

About the Role

This is your chance to bridge the gap between classroom and clinic. Working alongside a supervising veterinarian, you'll gain practical experience in patient care from start to finish: taking histories, performing physical exams, developing treatment plans, running diagnostics, performing dentistry, and assisting in or leading surgical procedures. You'll also develop your communication skills working with the medical team, support staff, and clients — skills that matter just as much in practice as clinical knowledge.

Externships typically run between two to eight weeks, depending on your schedule and the clinic's needs. This is a structured learning opportunity designed to prepare you for your first job after graduation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Gather patient histories and perform physical examinations under supervision
  • Develop and execute treatment plans
  • Perform or assist with diagnostic procedures
  • Provide dentistry services
  • Observe, assist with, or perform surgical procedures as appropriate to your experience level
  • Manage medical cases and patient follow-up care
  • Communicate effectively with the medical team, support staff, and clients

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled as a 4th-year veterinary student
  • In the clinical portion of your veterinary education

Benefits

  • Travel and living expense stipend for students in clinical rotation (amount varies by location — see NVA Canada's stipend list for details)

About the Practice

Bowmanville Veterinary Clinic is a general practice with over 50 years of history in the community. The clinic treats cats, dogs, and a diverse range of exotic species including avians, reptiles, amphibians, and pocket pets. The practice also provides veterinary services to the local zoo, giving students exposure to a unique variety of cases not typical of most GP clinics.

Bowmanville Veterinary Clinic is part of NVA Canada, a network committed to diversity, inclusion, and creating an environment where all team members can be themselves and reach their full potential.
