Veterinary Extern - General Practice

About the Role

This is your chance to gain meaningful clinical experience at Gananoque Veterinary Clinic, a collaborative three-hospital group that genuinely invests in student learning. You'll work alongside experienced Associate Veterinarians who mentor hands-on, giving you real exposure to the full scope of small animal and exotic practice.

Your externship will run between two to eight weeks, depending on your schedule and the hospital's needs. During this time, you'll develop core clinical competencies: taking patient histories, performing physical exams, crafting treatment plans, conducting diagnostics, assisting with dental and surgical procedures, and managing patient care. Beyond technical skills, you'll practice professional communication with the veterinary team, support staff, and clients—essential preparation for your career ahead.

Key Responsibilities

• Gather patient histories and perform physical examinations under supervision
• Assist in creating and implementing treatment plans
• Perform or observe diagnostic procedures
• Assist with or perform dentistry and surgical procedures
• Manage ongoing medical care of patients
• Communicate effectively with the veterinary team, support staff, and clients
• Work with a diverse patient population including cats, dogs, pocket pets, rabbits, reptiles, birds, and snakes

Requirements

• Currently enrolled in a veterinary degree program (any year of clinical education)
• In the clinical portion of your veterinary education
