About the Role
An externship at Baccalieu Trail Animal Hospital offers veterinary students the chance to experience genuine day-to-day practice operations while building clinical confidence under the guidance of experienced Associate Veterinarians. You'll work across the full scope of general practice — from patient histories and physical exams through diagnostics, treatment planning, dentistry, and surgical assistance. Beyond clinical skills, you'll sharpen your communication with the medical team, support staff, and clients in real-world settings.
Most externships run between two to eight weeks, depending on your schedule and the hospital's needs. All veterinary students — regardless of year — are welcome to apply. Veterinary students in the clinical phase of their education are eligible for travel and living expense stipends to support your participation.
Key Responsibilities
- Gather patient histories and perform physical examinations
- Assist with or observe creation of treatment plans
- Support diagnostic procedures and dentistry services
- Observe and assist in surgical procedures
- Participate in medical management of patients under veterinarian supervision
- Develop communication skills working with veterinarians, support staff, and clients
Requirements
- Currently enrolled as a veterinary student
- Preferably in the clinical portion of your veterinary education (but all year levels encouraged to apply)
