Veterinary Extern

About the Role

This externship gives you the chance to experience the real day-to-day work of a small animal general practice while building genuine clinical skills. You'll work alongside Associate Veterinarians in a practice committed to excellent medicine and exceptional animal care — learning what it actually takes to run a thriving veterinary hospital.

During your time at Beattie Animal Hospital, you'll gain hands-on experience gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, developing treatment plans, running diagnostics, and assisting with or performing surgical procedures. You'll also develop your communication skills working with the medical team, support staff, and clients — a crucial part of being an effective veterinarian. Dentistry services are part of the experience too. Most externships run between two to eight weeks, depending on your schedule and the hospital's needs.

Key Responsibilities

• Work closely with supervising Associate Veterinarians to develop clinical competencies
• Gather detailed patient histories and perform thorough physical examinations
• Assist in creating and executing treatment plans
• Perform diagnostic procedures under supervision
• Assist with or perform dental and surgical procedures as appropriate to your clinical level
• Participate in medical management and patient care alongside the team
• Communicate effectively with the veterinary team, support staff, and clients

Requirements

• Currently enrolled in a veterinary medicine program, specifically in the clinical year of your education
• Eligibility for externship placement as defined by your veterinary school
