Veterinary Extern - General Practice
Ready to bridge classroom and clinic? Gain hands-on experience at Riverside Small Animal Hospital in Kamloops — working alongside experienced veterinarians and building real clinical skills before graduation.
About the Role
This externship at Riverside Small Animal Hospital offers 3rd and 4th year veterinary students a structured introduction to the realities of small animal practice. You'll spend 2–8 weeks learning directly from Associate Veterinarians, moving through the full spectrum of clinical medicine: patient histories, physical exams, treatment planning, diagnostics, dentistry, surgery, and medical management. Beyond clinical skills, you'll develop communication confidence with the medical team, support staff, and pet owners — a critical part of becoming a well-rounded veterinarian.
Riverside is part of NVA's network of supportive practices that prioritize excellent medicine and exceptional animal care. You'll work in an environment designed to teach and mentor, not just put you to work. Most externships are flexible with student schedules, ranging from a few weeks to two months depending on your needs.
Eligibility: Veterinary students in their clinical years may be eligible for a travel and living expense stipend to support participation.
